WORKS 2020
HELENA GOÑI
At the end of 2018, while visiting a Diane Arbus
exhibition at the David Zwirner Gallery in New York,
I discovered her A Box Of Ten Photographs. It is a
portfolio that she started creating in 1969, which
contained ten photographs carefully printed by her.
Although, due to her passing, she couldnt complete
the 50-box edition that she had planned, one of the
few boxes she sold was to Harpers Bazaar artistic
director Bea Feitler; but she decided to include one
more print in her box, which makes it the only box
that contains eleven photographs. I was fascinated
by the idea of making something so restrained and,
at the same time, altering it, always keeping a certain
flexibility in ones creations.
Such an exercise of concretion immediately made
me ask myself a series of questions regarding my
own artistic practice: Which ten photographs would
I choose? What would be the criteria to select them
(least exhibited, most representative, most re-
cent,...)? And how much time would I give myself to make that edition? Because it could be an endless
exercise and learning process... Finally, after several
months of lockdown living with my archive, mixing it
and looking at it from different perspectives, the final
selection of 20 pictures found in this publication was made, following some definitely flexible criteria, between 21 and 27 September 2020, while I was on a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
